What are Blue Heirloom Eggs?

If you frequent the Old Dutch Cupboard, you’ve probably noticed the Blue Heirloom eggs we carry. We are currently selling them on flats that hold two and half dozen eggs. In this post, we will be answering some of the most common questions we’ve heard about these eggs.

Are blue heirloom eggs… chicken eggs? Yes, they are laid by chickens!

Do the birds who lay the eggs have blue feathers? Nope! They actually are a white-feathered breed called an Azur hen.

Where do these blue heirloom eggs come from? Alderfer Eggs is contracted with several farmers in the Lancaster County area. A few of these farmers house and take care of the Azur hens for us, we collect the eggs from them, then we package and sell the eggs to you!

Why are the yolks so orange? This is because the chickens are pastured. They are supplied with regular chicken feed, but they also have access to the grass outside where they can get some fresh nutrients – of course, depending on the weather (let’s be real, chickens want to stay warm and dry just like the rest of us). All of these rich, pure nutrients are what makes the yolks so orange. This also makes the eggs more flavorful and enjoyable to eat!
