About UsHere at the Old Dutch Cupboard, we are happy to offer you glass-bottled milk. What is the difference between glass bottles and plastic jugs? We are so glad you asked! Using glass bottles has many benefits, including keeping your milk colder, ensuring the best taste, and they can be sanitized and reused (less waste!!).
Glass bottles keep milk colder and ensures the best taste because they simply have better insulation than plastic or even cardboard containers! Homestead Creamery states that this is because glass “lacks the porous properties of other packaging materials, meaning that farm-fresh taste is locked in for longer.” They also suggest that plastic jugs may alter the taste of the milk because of the nature of this material (no one wants plastic-flavored milk…). Give glass-bottled milk a try and taste the difference for yourself!
Another big benefit of using glass rather than plastic or cardboard is the impact it has on reducing the waste in our landfills! At the Old Dutch Cupboard, we charge a small bottle deposit + the price of the milk for each new glass bottled milk you buy. Once you are finished the milk, simply rinse out the bottle or run it through the dishwasher before bringing it back to the store with you to exchange! You have a couple options: return your empty bottle and buy another bottle of milk for just the price of the milk or return your empty bottle and get your bottle deposit refunded if you don’t buy any more milk. This deposit is basically insurance for the bottle in case it breaks or you’d like to keep it to repurpose at home! “By returning glass bottles we are reducing the amount of new bottles that need to be made. Returning the bottles allows them to be reused many times. Then once they are recycled they can be re-manufactured without any decrease in quality” (Homestead Creamery). Glass bottles are the only packaging product between the three that can be sanitized fully and reused countless times, then melted down and made into something else once the cycle has come to an end for a particular bottle. It also costs less energy to sanitize and reuse a returned glass bottle than to make completely new one!
See how much of a difference you can make for your taste buds and your planet? Stop on by the Old Dutch Cupboard to find your favorite milk in a glass bottle.
